Zake: She is What a Poem Is
Zake: What a Poem Is
“She is, She is, She is /
what a poem is /
without trying”
An allegory, an ode a love song to the planet Mother Earth
She cannot be missed / she is every where inside us /
laughing at all the rules.
Stardust dew / piled high unto/ the tall grass of morn /
red ambition wrapped around / the petal of a rose.
Grief joy and heartache / Cities and cities of rage.
Her anthem belongs / to the Unicorns /
dreams uncollapsed and shaking /
She lived her whole life outside the lines.
Inside this epic tome to the earth and the sea we invoke the archetype of the Orisha Yemaya as our Mother of Worlds, to give homage to our Anyanwu mermaid in the form of Ntozake Shange a woman, a being, a force, born well ahead of her time. A voice, whether here or in the hereafter, that calls us forward into a realm where we feel everything, we taste every anguish and every pain without losing the embodying promise of magic, love, joy and pleasure always alive inside the enactment of our dreams.
Salsa double dutch run wild upstream, /
the sounds of bright soprano birds /
making love in a tree /
She is the lyrics of Brown fairytales, /
yellow and purples / greens and blues.
Hers is the tongue that touches you
Everywhere
Zake is a raft, a respite, a spaceship, a herd of unicorns wading in the high ambition of ritual offset against the weight and pressure of the sea. She offers us a source connection to the divine effortlessness of creation at the edge of our hope, to reinhabit an earth we had so soundly nearly succeeded in making unlivable.
